Course highlight

Line managers are increasingly expected to coach staff and move away from command and control towards autonomy and self-direction.

Meaningful work and self-motivation is getting more at the centre of attention, especially when dealing with knowledge workers. A coaching leadership style comes in handy to help in the transition. Yet, developing a coaching style is more than just a skill set, it often requires a change in mindset for the line manager.

This program will deal with both the skillset and the mindset to arm line managers to become better coaches.

Participants will:

  • Develop self awareness as to how they perform as a coach
  • Understand where coaching fits within the performance management cycle
  • Be able to create effective coaching relationships with direct reports and peers
  • Be aware and able to use different levels and perspectives of listening to deepen relationships
  • Be able to use powerful questions in coaching conversations with employees
  • Be able to use a pull approach, rather than a push approach in developing others
  • To plan and prepare for coaching success
  • Practice intensively the offered approaches

What you will learn

In these two days you will learn what true coaching really means and entails. You will see where it fits in the performance management cycle and how you can link it to the development level of the individual you are coaching. We will deal with the necessary mindset and skillset to make coaching a genuine process that allows people to grow. You will be able to practice deep listening and powerful questioning. You will use the GROW-model within the context of coaching and practice through different applications the skill of giving and receiving “impact” feedback..

Course format

This course will be taught using a combination of short formal instructions, combined with practical and interactive exercises and lots of filmed role plays used to reinforce the concepts taught in each section of the course.

Syllabus

Day 1:

 

- Welcome and introduction
- A definition of coaching
- The difference between training, coaching and mentoring
- Understanding the role of coaching as part of the performance management cycle
- Adapting my leadership style to the developmental need of the coachee
- The necessary skills and mindset for coaching

  • The art of active and deep listening – moving beyond simply hearing
  • Using powerful questions to create desired outcomes
  • Push versus pull – moving from “my agenda” to “their agenda”
  • Understanding where performance coaching differs from developmental coaching

 

- Supportive vs non-supportive communication 
- Understanding motivational patterns (for knowledge workers)
- Planning for a coaching session

  • What are the do’ and don’ts?

 

- Reflection on the day

 

Day 2:

 

A process approach to coaching – the GROW-model

  • Goal - Being clear in the objectives (long term/short term)
  • Reality - Assessing reality and current state
  • Options - Discovering options and opportunities
  • Will - Committing to action and agreeing on support

 

- Developmental conversations
- Application – intensive role plays with tailored feedback by both participants and facilitator
- Feedback in practice
- Reflection and commitment to action
- Celebration

Course Lecturers

Dr. Nico Binsfeld, MBA

Dr. Nico Binsfeld holds a Doctor of Business Administration, a Master of Science in Engineering and an MBA. He has over 30 years of experience in different engineering and management positions in media, telecommunications and IT, having held CEO positions of different SMEs in Luxembourg. He currently works as consultant for the “Agence pour le développement de l’emploi” were he is involved in different projects related to vocational training and digital transformation. Nico also has over 12 years of experience as an Associate Lecturer on the MBA programme of a triple accredited global business school covering “Foundations of Senior Management”, "Strategy" as well as the final, evidence-based management module "Making a Difference". In that role, he has worked in Luxembourg, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, the UK, Ireland, Romania, Austria and Russia.  


Maureen Whitehead-Lausman, MBA

19 years associate lecturer in Financial Strategy and Corporate Strategy for a triple accredited global business school. 20 years’ experience developing and delivering training programs for large and medium sized companies including in Germany, China, USA, Singapore, Ethiopia, South Africa, Russia and Romania. Corporate finance, value based management and finance for non-financial managers at middle and senior management level are a particular interest.
